Race Report: 2013 Australian Supercross Rd4 Phillip Island

Peick, Faith, Wilson, Rutledge and Todd share the spoils in action-packed fourth round.

Americans Weston Peick and Gavin Faith delivered a double victory for Carlton Dry Honda Racing in the fourth round of the 2013 Terex Australian Supercross Championship at Phillip Island today.

Peick topped a thrilling SX-Open main event to seize the series lead, capitalising on an opening lap incident that forced Matt Moss (Motul Pirelli Suzuki) to settle for 11th.

“I had a great day,” Peick said. “The morning was a bit rough, we were trying to find traction and get the bike setup but it really came together for the main. “The track started to deteriorate quite a bit so I tried to keep it as smooth as possible and being consistent paid off.

“It has been a good day I got the team on the top spot of the podium. We will run with the same game plan tomorrow.”

Returning South Australian Brett Metcalfe (SIC Racing/ADR Motorsports Kawasaki) scored a popular holeshot and led the first three laps, before Peick worked his way past.

Metcalfe would maintain pressure on Peick for a number of laps before the pair slightly separated, and then Mount Gambier winner Josh Hill (Hart & Huntington/InsureMyRide Suzuki) made his way into second on the 19th of 20 laps.

The end result saw Peick victorious by 3.129 seconds from Hill in a second consecutive US 1-2, with Californian-based Metcalfe impressing in third.

“It was a crazy race tonight, the sun was just setting right when we went out and vision was real tough,” Hill explained. “Everyone was having to be slightly cautious and the guys that weren’t didn’t have very good races.

“I started out in fourth and then tried to make a pass on Jay Marmont and clipped his rear tyre and just about fell over so I had to start my charge again.”

Jake Moss (Campbell Mining Suzuki) was again top local rider in fourth, clear of defending champion Jay Marmont (Monster Energy Kawasaki) in fifth. Marmont stalled during the main after bumping the KX450F of Metcalfe while running third on lap five.

Sixth was impressive rookie Sam Martin (DPH Motorsport Suzuki), followed by Daniel McCoy (Motorex KTM), who was also involved in the first lap incident along with Jacob Wright (Tattoo Racing Honda).

Rounding out the top 10 was Hayden Mellross (Carlton Dry Honda Racing), Lewis Woods (Hart & Huntington/Snapes Logistics Suzuki) and Wright.

Peick now takes over the points lead on 83, three clear of Jake Moss, with Hill a further two in arrears. Former leader Moss remains well in contention, fourth on 76 points.

Injuries took their toll on the 450 field, with Kirk Gibbs (Motorex KTM) and Lawson Bopping (CDR Yamaha) sidelined due to injuries from South Australia. Bopping’s teammate Kade Mosig was added to the injury list today, sustaining a broken wrist early in proceedings.

Defending champion Gavin Faith (Carlton Dry Honda) won his second SX-Lites main event of the season, inching to within two points of series leader Luke Styke (Serco Yamaha).

It was a pivotal first win for the 2014 Honda CRF250R, crossing the line 9.108 seconds ahead of ever-consistent former champion Ryan Marmont (Raceline Pirelli Suzuki).

“It was a good first night here at Phillip Island,” Faith said. “I holeshot both the heat and the main and I think that was the difference tonight. Getting out at the start meant I could ride my own race out front and this was crucial with the dusty conditions and sun in your eyes. We will move forward to tomorrow and see if we can do the same thing.”

Styke rebounded from fifth on lap one to methodically work his way onto the podium, eventually slotting his YZ250F into third to retain the series red plates.

Positions four through six were a trio of KTMs in Brenden Harrison (Choice Motorsport KTM), Dylan Long (KTM) and Kayne Lamont (Choice Motorsport KTM), trailed by Honda privateer Taylor Potter – the final rider on the lead lap.

Completing the top 10 was Nick Geck (TM Racing Australia), Tristen Cachia (Penrite Honda Race Team) and Rhys Dorreen (SIC Racing Kawasaki). Serco Yamaha’s Luke Arbon was forced out with a mechanical.

The Under 19s main event was won by GYTR Yamaha’s Jay Wilson in a continuation of his perfect season to date, heading Jake Emanuelli (Raceline Pirelli Suzuki) and Corey James (Cerry Sweet/Lucas Oil Yamaha). Wilson now has a 15-point lead in the series over James, with Joel Wightman (Yamaha) third.

The Women’s championship continued today in the second of three rounds, with Meghan Rutledge (Kawasaki) winning both races on her KX250F. Maddy Brown went 4-2 for second overall, tied on points with Sakaya Kanshiro (Honda) and Jessica Patterson (Yamaha).

In the Junior Lites it was Wilson Todd (Yamaha) who won with 5-1-1 finishes, his final win handing him the countback on a points tie with Nato Crawford (Yamaha). Jordan Hill (KTM) completed the podium finishers.
