Difficult and demanding track conditions produced a new MX1 class winner at the final grand prix of the FIM World Motocross Championship at Lierop in the Netherlands.

A morning downpour made for tough going for the majority of riders, but British rider, JK SKS Gebeen Yamaha’s Shaun Simpson, revelled in the conditions.

Simpson made a good start to the opening race to take a clear 21.348-second win over Belgian Kevin Strijbos and Russian Evgeny Bobryshev.

He placed third in the second race and took 45 points for the grand prix, holding out the consistent Rockstar Energy Suzuki World machine of Strijbos who carded another second in race two, for second overall.

2013 MX1 champion Antonio Cairoli was third overall after a problem with his back wheel in race one caused him to finish an uncharacteristic fourth. He won the second race of the GP in convincing fashion, dominating from the gate drop to the chequered flag.

Fourth overall was Evgeny Bobryshev, the Russian rider holding out Ken De Dycker by two points despite making a number of mistakes which ultimately cost him the lead of the first race.

Belgian Ken De Dycker claimed fifth for the grand prix, and secured overall for 2013. In contrast it was a tough outing for the championship runner-up Clement Desalle, who could only score 24 points for ninth place.

In the MX2 class, Jeffrey Herlings made a surprise return to action at the final round after being sidelined with a shoulder injury.

The 2013 champion revelled in the conditions, taking the first race easily. He crashed in the second race but was able to remount and make back lost ground to take another perfect 1-1 score to round out a stellar season.

Rockstar Bud Racing Kawasaki’s Dylan Ferrandis went 2-3 for second overall at Lierop, while Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jordi Tixier battled through injury for 3-4 finishes, and third overall.

Bulgarian Peta Petrov took fourth, with Frenchman Romain Febvre in fifth. Aussie Dean Ferris placed sixth for the GP and sixth overall for 2013.
