Australia’s Matt Phillips was amongst of a host of new champions crowned as the 2013 Maxxis Enduro World Championship came to a head on a weather-affected weekend in France.

The Husqvarna-mounted Phillips joined Honda’s Alex Salvini in wrapping up respective titles a day early.

Rain brought Saturday’s proceedings to a premature end, creating a course that became impassable and soon left riders stranded.

Italian Salvini had led at that point and was ahead when organisers elected to stop the race on the fourth cross test of the day, confirming his E2 title win.

“My focus was on winning the title but to do it by also winning the race is great,” said Salvini. When the rain came things got a bit crazy.

“But I just rode the best I could and thankfully it all worked out – I’m so happy to be the world champion.”

He finished the day ahead of Spanish rider Ivan Cervantes and home favourite Antoine Bassett.

E1 class victory went the way of previously-crowned champion Antoine Meo, who was ahead of Finnish tier Eero Remes and Jeremy Joly.

In the E3 class, it was another French rider at the front, with Christophe Nambotin winning from Swede Joakim Ljunggren and another home favourite in Fabien Planet.

Aussie Phillips found the conditions tough going, but held his mettle to come home runner-up on the opening day of Junior competition, sealing his title triumph.

“I’m so happy to have won the Junior world title,” said Phillips. “It was a weird day. First I was riding tight. I was a little nervous and made a few mistakes.

“But then it started raining and it became a mission to finish. I’m just glad to have made it back. It’s fantastic to be a world champion – this is what I came to Europe to do.”

British rider Jane Daniels won day one of Women’s competition, one of just four competitors contesting the final grand prix.

Officials were forced to reroute much of the course for Sunday’s running, using only the cross test layout and a liaison section that would be ridden four times.

With the major titles sewn up, it was a battle for final rankings amongst the premier Endurance classes.

French rider Jeremy Tarroux took the E1 class win from Remes and Marc Bourgeois, while E2 victory went the way of the dominant Salvini from Johnny Aubert and Pela Rene.

Matthias Bellino won the final E3 class stoush from Aigar Leok and Luis Correia.

Frenchman Loic Larrieu won the final day of EJ competition, benefiting from a one-minute penalty imposed upon Phillips, who was fifth.

Daniels made it two days on the trot with another win in the Women’s class but it wasn’t enough to deny Laia Sanz from taking the title.
