Ryan Villopoto and Eli Tomac have delivered flawless 1-1 finishes at the inaugural Built Ford Tough Utah National at Miller Motorsports Park to claim respective 450 and 250 class titles with a round still to run.

Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Villopoto entered the event with a considerable points advantage but left little doubt as to his determination, claiming the holeshot in moto one and running away to a comfortable win.

Behind him the Toyota JGR Yamaha of Justin Brayton rallied in second early, with Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey and Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart in close check.

Dungey would move to settle himself in second while Muscle Milk Honda’s Trey Canard picked off a number of places to establish himself in an eventual third.

The second 450 moto holeshot went to Rockstar Energy Racing’s Ryan Sipes, but order was soon restored as class pacesetter Villopoto soon took over at the front.

Dungey attempted to stick with Villopoto over the course of race but could do little to stop the Kawasaki rider from taking the lead, and in turn, the title of 2013 AMA Pro Motocross 450 class champion.

“It is gnarly to be at this level of racing but you just take it year by year and race by race,” said Villopoto. “There’s really no time to sit down and look at it as how many races do we need to win.

“The thing that keeps us going as racers is definitely winning. Yeah, winning is fun but during the week it’s tough.”

A resurgent Canard rounded out the event podium in third on the back of 3-3 finishes.

Suzuki rider Weston Peick was a strong fourth overall, with Brayton carding 6-7 finishes for fifth.

BTO Sport’s KTM’s Michael Byrne registered 21-15 finishes for 20th overall, while TwoTwo Motorsports’ Chad Reed was 39th on the back of 34-39 moto placings.

The battle for the early lead of opening 250 class was closely-contested, with Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Martin Davalos taking the holeshot before being pressured early by GEICO Honda trio Zach Osborne, Justin Bogle an Wil Hahn.

Osborne led briefly before teammate Eli Tomac began his customary move through the lead pack to take charge.

Tomac claimed a comfortable win from defending class champion, Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Blake Baggett.

Baggett had to contend with teammate Adam Cianciarulo for a race podium, with the rookie rider achieving his best moto finish of the season in third.

The title was still alive heading into the second moto, with Bogle taking the early lead before Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen took over at the front.

Roczen pushed hard to keep his slim 250 championship chances alive but Tomac proved too tough. The GEICO Honda rider moved by German rival, and, by virtue of Baggett’s last-lap pass, Roczen was relegated to third, dropping him out of title contention.

“I didn’t really know I had the championship wrapped up, I was just going with the flow,” said Tonac. “I didn’t really think it was going to happen today, I am sort of in shock right now. I think it will sink in more after I get some rest, right now I’m pretty tired and just out of energy.”

Baggett’s 2-2 finishes saw him finish second overall, with Roczen third (4-3) and Cianciarulo fourth (3-9).
