Some of the world’s best female riders are set to take part in the newly-announced Australian Women’s Supercross Championship (AWSC), to be held alongside the Australian Supercross Championship event at the 2013 Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix on Phillip Island.

The AWSC will be held over two rounds at the 20 October event, with accumulated points to determine the national champion. Rounds will comprise two five-lap races, along with an additional seven-lap race.

Participating riders will be announced closer to the event, though it will be expected Aussie fans will be able to cheer on fast females the likes of Meghan Rutledge, who claimed silver in the Women’s Moto X category at X Games a fortnight ago.

“This is fantastic!” said Rutledge. “I was absolutely shocked and delighted when I heard about the AWSC as I never expected it to happen in Australia. It is such a huge step forward for female racing.”

Australian Grand Prix Corporation (AGPC) chief executive Andrew Westacott said the addition of a women’s championship to the already well-received Supercross spectacle was an exciting venture.

“The Supercross Championship has proven to be a crowd favourite and with the introduction of the women battling it out in their inaugural challenge, there is sure to be non-stop action all weekend,” said Westacott.

International Entertainment Group’s Yarrive Kosnky was pleased to confirm the AWSC as part of the event which will again be held upon a purpose-built track at the circuit’s Lukey Heights section.

“Australia has some of the fastest female Supercross riders in the world and I’m glad that we can work with the AGPC to show them the respect they deserve,” Konsky said.

In response to the inaugural Australian Supercross Championship event’s success, the AGPC has introduced a new ticketing option which includes grandstanding viewing of the track.

Supercross grandstand tickets will cost $80 for a three-day reserved seat, in addition to the price of a regular general admission ticket. Other ticketing options, including a VIP package, are also available.
