Three rounds remaining in the 2013 Monster Energy MX Nationals title race marks a pivotal part of the year, as just two points separates Matt Moss and Todd Waters entering this weekend’s eighth round of 10 at Swan Hill.

But two years ago with three rounds remaining, we had a very similar battle that was taking shape – one which would eventually go down to the wire itself.

It was July 2011 at the now defunct Wodonga round of the MX Nationals, in which Jay Marmont won his second successive round to bolster himself back into title contention. It was an admirable performance from the four-time champion and one that was vital in his season.

At that point he was still 32 points behind Ferris and sitting well back in fourth place overall, but history proves he would go onto clinch the crown after a dramatic turn of events that included injuries for Ferris and Josh Coppins before the season was out.

Interestingly, back then Moss won the Lites round at Wodonga – his fourth overall in seven rounds – to stretch a 58-point buffer in the series that he would go onto win.

Fast forward to 2013 and it’s now Moss and Waters who lead the way, however Scotsman Billy Mackenzie has inched to within 31 points of the lead after his recent Hervey Bay overall win.

Something tells us that this year is going to heat up as the rounds fly by over the next month of competition!
