Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey has earned his second 450 Class overall win of the 2013 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing.

Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart kicked off the annual Red Bull Budds Creek National with the fastest qualifying time in the 450 Class.

But it was JGRMX/Toyota/Yamaha’s Justin Brayton and MotoConcept’s Mike Alessi who battled it out early in moto one for the Motorcycle Superstore holeshot.

Alessi secured the lead, however Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto soon assumed the top spot and began to gap the stacked field of riders.

Dungey moved his way into second and slowly closed the gap on Villopoto. During his late race charge, Dungey went down and remounted to hold onto second place with Alessi taking third.

Alessi once again grabbed the moto two holeshot before Dungey stole the lead and began to pull away. Villopoto was back in the pack and began to pick off riders one by one.

Villopoto was unable to close the sizeable gap Dungey had created, allowing Dungey to take the moto win and the overall win with 2-1 scores, beating the defending champions 1-2 moto scorecard.

Lucas Oil/Troy Lee Designs/Honda’s Malcolm Stewart took his best finish of season with a third in moto two, the 450 Class rookie was fourth overall behind Honda Muscle Milk’s Trey Canard who rounded out the podium with 6-4 finishes.

Australia’s Chad Reed continues to face an up hill battle with his illness. Reed finished 14th overall on the day aboard his TwoTwo Motorsports entry.

Villopoto continues to lead the 450 Class standings 16 points head of Dungey in second followed by Honda Muscle Milk’s Justin Barcia in third. Reed currently sits 17th overall.

In the 250 Class it was defending champion Blake Baggett who returned to form at Budds Creek, clinching his first overall win of the 2013 season.

Red Bull KTM’s Marvin Musquin was out in front during moto with a solid gap ahead of teammate Ken Roczen who had made his way through the pack during the opening laps of the moto.

During the final laps of the 30-minute moto, Roczen caught his teammate, but Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Baggett had closed in on the KTM duo and was pushing the pace.

Baggett was able to make his way around both Roczen and Musquin to run away with the moto win. Musquin was able to hold off Roczen for the remainder of the moto.

In moto two it was Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Darryn Durham who took the early lead and held his position for the first half of the race.

However, GEICO Honda’s Eli Tomac was on a tear, charging through the top 10 on his way to the top. Tomac eventually caught Durham and took the lead late in the race.

Tomac maintained his lead and went on to take the moto win, earning himself second overall for the day with a 5-1 score. Baggett was second in moto two, his 1-2 scores handing him the overall.

Rounding out the podium was Musquin with a 2-7 score, followed by his teammate Roczen who used 3-6 moto scores for fourth overall on the day.

Roczen continues to lead the 250 Class championship, but Tomac has closed the gap to nine points with seven rounds remaining. Musquin holds down third overall followed by Baggett and GEICO Honda’s Zach Osborne.

Australia’s Jackson Richardson was 26th in the 250 Class aboard his privateer Honda. Richardson currently sits 21st overall in points.

The Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship heads to Southwick on 29 June for round six of the series which will serve as the final event at the iconic venue before it makes its departure from the racing schedule.
