Aussie off-road sensation Matt Phillips has shot to the lead of the Maxxis FIM Enduro World Championship’s (EWC) Junior class after a dominant double win in Spain.

Husqvarna Factory Team by CH Racing’s Phillips won the opening four tests in the EJ class on the first day, setting him up for the overall win, but a mistake in the final extreme test saw his lead slashed.

The TE 310 R-mounted rider gathered himself and delivered a mistake-free ride to round out the day and keep a hold of the victory.

The competition was closer on the second day, with Phillips locked in a three-way battle for position with local rider Mario Roman and Italian Giacomo Redondi.

He kept his nose ahead and was pleased to again finish the day on top.

“It feels so good to have won both days in Spain,” said Phillips. “I spent some good time training with Matti Seistola before the race, and I was feeling confident.

“I knew what to expect from the race and the other guys in my class, but the conditions were tough – I’d say it was one of the hardest events I’ve ever raced.”

Phillips credited his team for their backing as they stood behind his charge through the second day’s final series of tests.

“The team did so much to help me this weekend, they really pushed me all the way to the end of the second day,” he said.

“I think I made as many mistakes as the other guys in my class but I just kept pushing and pushing and things worked out great.”

Phillips moves five points clear of Redondi following the third of seven rounds on the EWC calendar.
