The 2013 Monster Energy Supercross, an FIM World Championship, made its way back to the west coast this over the weekend for round 15 of the series at Seattle’s CenturyLink Field.

Honda Muscle Milk’s Justin Barcia kicked off the main event proceedings with the Nuclear Cowboyz Holeshot in the 450SX class, with MotoConcepts’s Mike Alessi and Slaton Racing Honda’s Vince Friese in tow.

While Barcia raced away with the lead, defending series champion Ryan Villopoto found himself within the top five. Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey and TwoTwo Motorsports’ Chad Reed both went down in the first-turn – Dungey was able to re-join the race while Reed suffered a DNF.

Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Villopoto wasted little time in moving forward and was in second place by lap two, just a few tenths behind Barcia. Following Villopoto through the pack was Rockstar Energy Racing’s Davi Millsaps who now sat in third place.

Both Barcia and Villopoto slowly pulled away from Millsaps as the race progressed, setting the stage for a battle to the finish. The Seattle crowd cheered on Villopoto, their hometown rider, but as the duo encountered lapped riders, Barcia’s lead began to increase.

Barcia led all 20 laps of the Main Event, mirroring the performance from his maiden 450SX class victory at the second race of the season in Phoenix. Villopoto took the runner-up spot while Millsaps remained in third. Dungey took home fourth with Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer in fifth.

Villopoto maintains his 450SX series lead heading into the penultimate round, leading Millsaps by 25 points with Dungey just one-point behind Millsaps in third place.

In the 250SX class it was GEICO Honda’s Eli Tomac who scored the all-important Nuclear Cowboyz Holeshot and and quickly pulled away from the field. Behind him, Rockstar Energy Racing’s Ryan Sipes and Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil Honda’s Christian Craig assumed second and third, respectively.

Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen positioned himself in fourth, but moved into a podium spot during the opening lap of the race. With his championship rival behind him, Tomac opened a multiple-second margin as worked his way past Craig for second during lap two.

For several laps, the pair maintained their distance from one another until Tomac came up short on a jump during lap nine and found himself on the ground. Roczen capitalized on the mistake and took over the lead, but Tomac was able to remount in second.

Roczen pulled away for the remainder of the 15-lap main event and scored his third win of the season, extending his lead in the point standings. Despite his misfortune, Tomac salvaged a runner-up finish with GEICO teammate Zach Osborne in third.

Roczen carries a 20-point advantage over Tomac into next weekend’s eighth race of the Western Regional 250SX championship. Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil Honda’s Cole Seely holds down third overall another 30 points behind Tomac.

The series now makes it way to Salt Lake City next Saturday on 27 April for the penultimate round of the season at Rice Eccles Stadium.
