Rewind: Supercross meets MotoGP

MotoOnline.com.au looks back at the success of Phillip Island's Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix in 2012.

With the news this week that the Australian Supercross Championships will head north to Darwin in September to race alongside the Australian Superbikes at Hidden Valley Raceway, this week’s Rewind takes you back to last year’s MotoGP event at Phillip Island.

The idea to host supercross alongside other major motorsport (or even non-motorsport) events is a very feasible one, potentially cross-promoting the sport and serving as additional entertainment for spectators. As a result, the opportunity to gain more fans will be increased as they’re introduced to dirt bikes.

The Phillip Island event in October last year was a special one, not only since Chad Reed was back, but because we saw the likes of Valentino Rossi on hand taking it all in from the star-studded Monster Energy VIP area.

Supercross under the promotion of International Entertainment Group made major inroads on that super-chilly day in Victoria, ultimately striking up a bond with road racing that we could see expand in years to come. Next up, how about a V8 Supercars round to cap it off? We’d be right there for the ride!
