Australian supercross number two Daniel McCoy has his sights set on campaigning a Yamaha in the upcoming Monster Energy MX Nationals, in a bid to continue his form on the YZ450F following SX.

The 28-year-old put forward a phenomenal performance as a late addition to CDR Yamaha during supercross last year, challenging for the title and claiming three podiums in four rounds.

However the Melbourne-based CDR Yamaha team has opted to sign outdoor specialist Billy Mackenzie for the Australian Motocross Championship alongside Lawson Bopping in 2013 (click here for yesterday’s announcement).

With McCoy expected to rejoin CDR come supercross at the end of this year, he’s confirmed to MotoOnline.com.au that he’s looking to remain on a Yamaha in the MXN series, potentially with technical support from Craig Dack and Yamaha.

“After what I did in supercross last year Dacka has said he’d like to have me again in supercross this year, but obviously nothing is confirmed yet,” McCoy explained from the United States.

“That’s what I would like to do because I’m a big fan of the YZ450F and I really like the team. I feel like if I do ride a Yamaha outdoors, a similar bike to what I raced in supercross, then I would be competitive.

“I started my professional career on Yamahas and have had a lot of success with the brand. There’s something about Yamaha that I really gel with, so I feel that if I can get on a YZ450F outdoors then my results could be better than than ever have been.”

McCoy’s strongest outdoor campaign came in 2008 when he scored three podiums on his way to sixth overall in the championship as part of the factory Honda team.

The 2011 season saw McCoy step back to the MX2 class with Motul Pirelli Suzuki, picking up six moto podium finishes and winning the overall at Toowoomba. He finished sixth in the series.

CDR Yamaha has won the last five straight MX Nationals titles with Jay Marmont and Josh Coppins respectively.

The 2013 MX Nationals series is scheduled to commence on 14 April at Raymond Terrace in New South Wales.
