This year’s Motocross of Nations gives a rider the chance to join a select club. Ryan Dungey with a little luck they can join Ryan Villopoto who has four wins in the event. He can also be the first man in 22 years to win the event four times in a row.
It has been a seven-year reign by Team USA and in those seven years the names Ryan Dungey, Ricky Carmichael, Ryan Villopoto, Tim Ferry, Ivan Tedesco and James Stewart have been an important part of that success.
Of course Team USA didn’t compete in 2004, 2002 or 2001, and the team in 2003 of Ryan Hughes, Tim Ferry and Carmichael wasn’t really considered a strong enough threat to the Belgians despite RC winning the individual overall.
If Dungey can be amongst the winners in Lommel in a little over a week’s time he will become the first rider since Jeff Ward more than 20 years ago to win the event four times on the trot. Ward of course has seven wins in the event, but won his last four in 1990, ’89, ’88 and ’87.
David Bailey has the most wins in a row with five in 1982, ’83, ’84, ’85 and ’86. Injury prevented him from racing after the 1986 victory.
