Cairoli and Herlings dominate the sands of Lierop

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing's Antonio Cairoli captured his sixth Grand Prix win in a row at the Lierop FIM Motocross World Championship round.

Antonio Cairoli extended his MX1 championship lead in The Netherlands.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli captured his sixth Grand Prix win in a row at the Lierop FIM Motocross World Championship round.

Cairoli rode to the MX1 class victory with a 1-1 moto scorecard, obtaining his 52nd overall victory of his FIM Motocross World Championship career.

Second overall on the day was Cairoli’s Red Bull KTM Factory Racing teammate Ken De Dycker. The Belgian rider used 3-2 moto finishes to secure the runner-up position.

Rounding out the premier class podium was Rockstar Energy Suzuki World’s Tanel Leok, 4-3 moto scores saw Leok score his first podium finish since 2012.

Cairoli now leads the championship chase by 76 points over Clement Desalle. In third place overall is Gautier Paulin who sits 48 points behind Desalle.

In the MX2 division it was a Jeffrey Herlings domination, the Dutchman is known for his superior sand skills, and proved to the competition that he very comfortable in those conditions.

Herlings rode his Red Bull KTM Factory Racing entry to a perfect 1-1 moto sweep, but more impressively the 17-year-old was able overlap every rider except for his second place teammate, Jeremy van Horebeek.

Van Horebeek made it a 1-2 finish for the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing squad, using his 2-2 moto finishes to take the runner-up position.

Honda Gariboldi-Esta’s Max Anstie scored his maiden podium finish of the season at Lierop with a pair of third place finishes.

Herlings’ closest contender, Tommy Searle, was unable to take his Team Floride Monster Energy Kawasaki Pro Circuit entry to the front, finishing up in fourth overall and losing valuable championship points.

Herlings now leads the MX2 standings by 65 points over Searle, with Van Horebeek holding down third position with a 38-point margin between himself and second place.

The Italian track of Faenza will host next weekends the penultimate round of the season, where both MX1 and MX2 World titles could possibly be crowned.
