Two-stroke switch the right one for Kayne Lamont

The decision to switch to a KTM 250 SX two-stroke proved to be a wise one for Monster Energy MX Nationals MXD Class contender Kayne Lamont, finding even more success after joining the fast-growing pre-mix army in 2012.

The decision to switch to a KTM 250 SX two-stroke proved to be a wise one for Monster Energy MX Nationals MXD Class contender Kayne Lamont, finding even more success after joining the fast-growing pre-mix army in 2012.

Lamont saw success early in the year when he entered the series on a stock 250 four-stroke, winning a moto at the season opener in Conondale. But due to the financial costs of running a competitive four-stroke, the decision was made to switch to the two-stroke.

“At the start of the season I started on the four-stroke, on the stock one, and then I was either going to get an engine built for that or go two-stroke,” Lamont explained.

More power out of the box and lower maintenance costs proved the best option for his family to go racing, and it seems the young Kiwi has mastered the art of riding fast and efficiently on the at times brutal two-stroke.

Since jumping on his KTM 250 SX, Lamont has seen continued success, including overall wins at the Wonthaggi and Murray Bridge rounds.

“We figured out what would have the best horsepower and what would be the cheapest for our family, so we came out with the two-stroke,” he added.

“I really enjoy riding a two-stroke, to be honest, and I’d ridden 125s for quite a while. I just really enjoyed getting back on the two-stroke.”

Lamont currently holds second place overall in the MXD class after five rounds, just nine points behind the 250F-mounted series leader, Dylan Long.
