Serco Yamaha Metal Mulisha Racing team owner Gavin Eales has commended Luke Styke on his performances during the first three rounds of the Monster Energy MX Nationals.

Styke has stretched out to a handy 23-point lead in the MX2 title chase after landing on the podium at all three rounds, quickly asserting himself as the surprise of the series so far.

After giving Styke an opportunity to ride for Serco late in last year’s outdoor series when his regular riders were injured, the partnership has quickly formed to become one of the strongest in the sport.

“Not many people in the pits would have thought Luke Styke would be winning this championship after three rounds and standing on the podium at every round,” Eales said.

“I’m impressed with his work ethic and determination and now he is adding consistency and a well thought-out plan to his racing and it’s showing in the results.”

While Styke continued his form at Wonthaggi with second overall, teammate and title rival Kirk Gibbs struggled to sixth overall after a number of falls, but Eales is certain the current two-time national number two will bounce back.

“Kirk just made some mistakes at crucial times,” Eales reflected. “He is better than that and is disappointed, but I expect him to bounce back strongly at the next couple of rounds and make it a tight three way battle for the championship.”

Styke currently leads the series over Wonthaggi winner and former Serco rider Ford Dale, while Gibbs sits third, 30 points behind Styke.
