Australian Motocross Championship leader Josh Coppins has spoken out about the race formats of the Monster Energy MX Nationals, calling for more laps after two rounds contested in 2012.

The former world championship runner-up took control of the MX1 series after winning at Coonabarabran on Sunday, however he’s not satisfied that the opening two motos were long enough for a national event.

Series promoter WEM aims for a length of 15 minutes each in the two back-to-back motos at Goanna Tracks, which amounted in five laps apiece before an 11 lapper made up the final 30-minute moto of the round.

Coppins struggled to find his groove in the first two motos with 4-3 finishes, before moto three saw the CDR Yamaha rider battle to his first win of the season in the race and for the overall.

“The two tracks have made for some good racing so far, but personally – and I stress this is only my opinion – I think the five-lap races are a bit schoolboy, a bit junior,” Coppins explained. “We’re the best racers in Australasia and five laps isn’t enough.

“I respect that WEM is trying to make a good show for the crowds, but this weekend we arrived on Friday, had practice and qualifying on Saturday and raced on Sunday, and we only did a total of 21 laps of racing.

“To me that’s a bit ludicrous. Again, this is my opinion and I’ll race no matter what.”
