Kiwi veteran Josh Coppins is confident that his form in the opening round of the 2012 Monster Energy MX Nationals will bode well for a strong season ahead.

The CDR Yamaha rider finished second overall behind countryman Ben Townley at Conondale, however with Townley soon departing to TwoTwo Motorsports in the U.S, Coppins is in the box seat to take over the title lead.

Coppins scored 3-3-2 finishes for the round despite a fall in the first moto, confirming that he’s back to full fitness after undergoing multiple shoulder surgeries during the off-season.

“Ben was on another level today and raced extremely well, so congratulations to him,” Coppins admitted. “I’m satisfied with how I raced today.

“I was able to make the passes I needed to and ride some good laps to break clear of the riders behind me. For a hot day and rough track, my fitness proved to be good and I think it was a good start to the championship.”

Coppins entered the round with confidence on his side, recently sealing second behind Townley in the New Zealand outdoor series last month.
