The New Zealand Motocross Championship overall winners have been crowned on Sunday at the final round in Taupo.

Townley won the final round and took home his first-ever New Zealand senior motocross title, after racing overseas since 2001. The former world champion came close to an MX1 series clean sweep in the process, winning 11 from 12 motos.

Josh Coppins took the runner-up spot, with fellow Kiwi and defending MX1 champion Cody Cooper rounding out the top three overall in the championship standings.

In the MX2 class, veteran Darryl King came into the final round in a tight points battle with Scott Columb.

But luck was on King’s side, taking 3-1 results while Columb suffered an eighth place finish in the first moto and a disappointing DNF in the second moto.

The MX2 class standings finished up with King on top, Columb holding onto second and Rhys Carter rounding out the podium for the season.
