Motocross racer Mitchell Evans is seeking support in his quest to raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation through his participation in the World’s Greatest Shave fundraising drive.

The 13-year-old of Cairns in far north Queensland is hoping to raise $2000 or more and is seeking the support of the motocross industry and wider community in his quest.

The choice to support the Leukaemia Foundation through the World’s Greatest Shave was a natural response for the generous teenager who personally knew someone impacted by a blood disorder.

“I met Paul Broomfield when I was representing Australia in the 65cc class at the FIM World Championships in France in 2010, he was our team manager,” said Mitch “He was just such an awesome guy who did everything he could to help Dad and I.

“It was a really tough trip for us, our luggage was lost on its way to France and we had bike troubles which could have easily ruled us out of contention. Broomy did his best to make sure everything was under control and supported me on my way to finishing sixth in the world, with the Australian team coming home in third.”

It was not until after the event when the Evans family contacted Broomy to thank him for his help that they learned of his battle with Aplastic Anaemia. Broomy lost that battle seven months later at age 35. It was at this time Mitch planned to take part in the fundraising campaign in his honour.

Mitch has scheduled to shave his usually tousled hair-do on 18 March 2012 at his local Mareeba Motocross Club event in the hope to raise a final collection of funds.

“With my head shaved I might have to organise a smaller helmet to race in!” he joked.

To kick off the fundraising effort, KTM Australia will be supporting Mitch with a very generous $500 donation.
