After five of 17 rounds in the 2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship, the series goes full steam ahead into the sixth round at San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium this weekend.

Ryan Villopoto became the first repeat winner of the 2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross season last weekend at Anaheim II, reclaiming the points lead and red plate coming into the San Diego round.

After five rounds of action which has produced four different winners in the 450 class, the riders come into the San Diego round in a tight points chase, with only 13 points separating the top four in the championship standings.

Last year in San Diego, Chad Reed captured his maiden victory as a team owner. This year with the full support of American Honda behind him, Reed will aim to duplicate his performance from a year ago inside a stadium where he is the winningest rider in Monster Energy Supercross history, boasting six victories.

In the Western Regional Supercross Lites Championship, three different young riders have taken their turn on top of the box. GEICO Honda’s Eli Tomac put forth another dominant effort in Anaheim II, capturing his third consecutive win putting himself 22 points ahead of second place rider Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Dean Wilson.

Coming into the final race before the west coast series takes an eight-race break from competition, Tomac’s winning streak has the potential to continue into San Diego, where he broke through for his first career supercross win one year ago.
