Top 10: Bikes of AMA Supercross 2012

MotoOnline.com.au breaks down 10 of the best bikes in this year’s AMA Supercross series.

One of the greatest things when a new season of Monster Energy AMA Supercross racing commences is the revelation of new bikes even before the gates drop. The U.S. has the trickest bikes on the planet, ridden by the best riders, so we thought we’d name our Top 10.

Chad’s bike is a full factory weapon with a twist of TwoTwo mixed in as he chooses to run Pro Circuit equipment such as the exhaust, engine hoses, etc. Nobody matches the style of Team TwoTwo, which makes this bike our favourite of them all!

When a manufacturer builds a special run of bikes (said to be around 400) just to homologate a factory bike to go racing, you know they are in it to win it. That’s exactly what KTM did with Dungey’s ‘Factory Edition’ 450 SX-F and so far it looks to be paying off.

When RV stepped up to the 2012 model outdoors last year, he took control of the series and went on to win. Now, in SX he seems just as fast, but hasn’t quite found consistency. That said, he believes his bike is the best on track and he has the speed to prove it. It’s interesting to note that with a new team manager onboard, the team is back with PC.

If there’s one rider who has been incredibly impressive this year in the Lites, it has to be Tomac. The Factory Connection team has his Honda dialed and he’s on track to reward them with another indoor title out west – much to Mitch Payton’s dismay!

There may be plenty of factory specification Hondas run by private teams in the AMA paddock this year (Reed, Windham and Short), but there’s nothing quite like the quality that you find on a bike run directly by American Honda. The detail and finish of the bike on race day is incredible.

Pro Circuit’s race bikes are known to be the best 250Fs on the planet and they usually have the riders to match, which is exactly why Wilson is the current 250 Class champion outdoors. Expect more wins before the season’s out.

Matt Moss’ JDR/J-Star/KTM 250SX-F
JDR Motorsports is serious about gaining success in the States, and you only have to take an up close look at Mossy’s SX-F to realise that fact. With factory support this year and some really trick electronics, only the JDR team knows exactly what they are working with in 2012. Either way, the bike looks unreal.

As the lone factory Suzuki in the field for 2012, Metty has huge pressure on him to get the job done, but they’re really waiting for him to battle for the outdoor title. In supercross he’s yet to find 100 percent comfort in his RM-Z, but we have little doubt he can battle within the top seven consistently once it’s sorted.

James Stewart’s JGRMX Yamaha YZ450F
This is the bike that everybody was speaking about ahead of the season, since the Gibbs team made some massive revisions to the tank and airbox on Stewart’s race bike. It’s slimmer than a stock Yamaha, making for a unique ride developed specifically for Stewart. He also runs Showa forks and a custom JGRMX shock.

Broc Tickle’s Monster Energy Pro Circuit 450 SX-F
They’ve finally done it – Pro Circuit is fielding a 450 full time in supercross! When Broc Tickle pointed out of the Lites as champion last year, Payton and PC decided to form a Supercross Class entry for the first time ever. It makes sense too, because the ride should be a good stepping stone for rising Kawasaki riders.
