Motul Pirelli Suzuki’s Daniel McCoy and JDR Motorex KTM’s Matt Moss have taken spectacular hard-fought victories in Wollongong’s second round of the 2011 Monster Energy Super X, Australasian Supercross Championship, at WIN Stadium.

Qualifying and heat races were contested in dry conditions, before a heavy thunderstorm struck the stadium and caused havoc for the second weekend in succession to begin the new season.

A heated meeting between race organisers and teams resulted in an agreement that the format would be switched from the Survival and Triple Header, instead racing a 15-lap main event for each category.

The Under 19s and Junior main events were cancelled due to the conditions, which lashed the stadium directly following the last chance qualifiers for the pro classes.

Come main event time for the Lites, it was all Matt Moss, who took his second win in a row for JDR Motorex KTM. Moss led from lap one and was never headed, jumping the triple in the opening laps before cruising to victory.

“I’m just stoked,” Moss said. “I’m actually surprised with how I rode all day, I felt really good. I’d love to clean-sweep this whole series and get that number one plate. Adding Super X to the outdoor title would be a big confidence boost before going to America in 2012.”

Behind Moss was British rising star Steven Clarke on the Motul Pirelli Suzuki, maintaining the pace with Moss in the early laps before fading into the clutches of American import Gavin Faith (Carlton Dry Honda Thor Racing).

Clarke held onto the position, while Faith dropped behind Moss’ teammate Brenden Harrison in the final laps. Luke Styke (Serco Yoshimura Yamaha) completed the top five.

Dean Ferris crashed out of the race aboard his Monster Energy Kawasaki, while Kirk Gibbs was another rider to crash in the early laps before circulating to finish 12th.

In the premier Pro Open class it was McCoy who took a popular victory after taking the lead in the early laps when Billy Mackenzie (Monster Kawasaki) went down.

McCoy was challenged by Lawson Bopping (Raceline Pirelli Suzuki) until he crashed while attempting to pass, and then Dan Reardon (JDR Motorex KTM) was caught up with lapped traffic as he homed in on McCoy.

It was McCoy who was riding at his consistent best, however, holding on the win ahead of Reardon, while hometown hero Jay Marmont was third for CDR Rockstar Energy Drink Yamaha.

“It feels great to be up here and I have to thank the team, Motul Pirelli Suzuki,” McCoy said. “I really wanted to ride the 450 in Supercross and I’m glad I’m here. I knew what I had to do and I have so many people I need to thank.”

Bopping rebounded to take fourth, while Todd Waters was fifth for Carlton Dry Honda Thor Racing. Opening round winner Tye Simmonds ended up sixth for JDR Motorex KTM.

Michael Phillips (Carlton Dry Honda Thor Racing), Craig Anderson (Berry Sweet Strawberries/Lucas Oil Honda), Mackenzie and Jake Moss (CDR Rockstar Drink Yamaha) rounded out the top 10.

McCoy now holds a single-point advantage in the series to take over the red plate from Simmonds, who sits second, while Reardon has lept to third.
