Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Dean Ferris remains focused on the Pro Lites title in the Monster Energy Super X, Australasian Supercross Championship, despite a disastrous second final in the Double Header main event at Melbourne’s season opener.

Ferris proved his form with a heat race win and continued the form with the first final victory of the year, however it all turned pear-shaped in final two when he crashed while leading, and then crashed again on the final lap before getting caught in the mud.

A 10th place finish in that race placed him fifth overall, still well in title contention just nine points in arrears of round one winner Matt Moss. If he can eliminate his mistakes, 21-year-old Ferris believes the title can be his.

“I got my first heat race win and main event win, which was cool, but the mistakes I made in the last final were unfortunate,” Ferris told MotoOnline.com.au. “I learned a lot and I’ll make sure it won’t happen again.

“I know my speed is good on the supercross track. I always know that I’m going to be at the front from the work I put in and I’ve got lots of talent. I might surprise some people, but not myself.

“This is where I expect to be and the goal is still to win the championship. I ain’t going to stop until I do.”

Speak of his crash in the second final while coming under increasing pressure from Moss, Ferris said it was a simple mistake in the tricky conditions.

“The track was slick, I had mud on my hands, and then got caught up on a tough block,” he reflected. “There was sort of no way out and the rest was history. I need to minimise mistakes so I don’t get caught in that position again.

“It was a bit depressing that I did that, but I learned. I’m kind of sick of those mistakes, but I learned from it and I’ll get it right. I’ll use all of this for the future.”
