Opening round of national Women's Motocross Championship cancelled

Motorcycling Australia has just confirmed that the opening round of the Australian Women’s Motocross Championship has now been cancelled, leaving the second round at Coolum as the sole championship event.

Promoter, Rebel Media Group (RMG), made the difficult decision to cut one of the two scheduled rounds early on Tuesday morning, as the industry and competitors continue to feel the effects of the economic climate.

RMG Director, Fiona Collins, said while it was disappointing to have to cut one of the rounds, it would allow both her and her team to focus all their energies on creating a great stand alone event for the girls at Coolum.

“This has to be one of the toughest decisions I’ve had to make,” Collins said.

“We’d already received entries for the first round, however overwhelming feedback from both the industry and the competitors themselves, was that having two rounds was too much of a stretch in these difficult times.”

“With that in mind, we made the difficult decision to cut the first round, allowing us to focus on providing both competitors and sponsors with the best event possible,” Collins added.

The Coolum championship race is scheduled to take place on August 27-28.
