Supercross champ Villopoto sets sights on first 450 outdoor title

Villopoto is looking to add an outdoor championship to his 2011 SX title

Villopoto is looking to add an outdoor championship to his 2011 supercross crown.

New AMA Supercross Champion Ryan Villopoto has spoken out about his crown won in Las Vegas earlier this month, but now has his sights firmly set on the AMA Pro Motocross Championship to round out 2011.

In a season marked by extreme highs and lows all of the top five championship contenders, Villopoto was excited to come away with the championship.

“To win during a season that has been marked the greatest season ever is an amazing feeling,” said Villopoto.

“I put into this season and to see the hard work pay off is awesome. It’s really hard to describe just how much this means. I know I’ve won championships, but this one feels just as special as the ones before.”

With the supercross season now done and dusted, Villopoto has set his sights on the AMA Motocross Championship, set to begin the weekend at Hangtown.

A former outdoor champion in the Lites class, he would love nothing more than to add a premier class outdoor championship to his resume.

In a stacked field including reigning outdoor champion Ryan Dungey and 2009 series winner Chad Reed, it will be no easy task, but Villopoto is up to the challenge.

“I’m really looking forward to outdoors,” said Villopoto. “It’s been almost two years since I have raced the series and it was always something I looked forward to.

“It would be nice to back up the supercross championship with another championship, but we’ll see how it goes.”
