Recharged Reed ready for Salt Lake's penultimate Supercross battle

Aussie hero Chad Reed is well in contention for a third AMA Supercross title in 2011.

Aussie hero Chad Reed is well in contention for a third AMA Supercross title in 2011.

A rare break from proceedings in a taxing season schedule has allowed Monster Energy AMA Supercross title prospect Chad Reed the chance to relax and recharge his batteries before this weekend’s penultimate round at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City.

The TwoTwo Motorsports/Bel-Ray Racing team leader relished the chance to spend time with his young family before readying for two consecutive weekends of intense racing, starting in Utah on Saturday night.

Already a two-time AMA/World Supercross Champion, Reed enters the event placed second in a tightly-contested points battle – just nine points separate first from fourth.

“I’ve really enjoyed the time off and have been able spend time with Ellie and Tate which is very important to me,” said Reed. “It has been an incredible year and they’ve been with me in the pits when possible or back home cheering me on.

“It’s down to the business end now and we’re right in the hunt. I’m excited to be part of the battle, without a doubt it’s been the most entertaining season for years.

“I’m going out there to make every lap count. I’m confident I’ve got the experience at this end of the season to challenge for TwoTwo Motorsports’ first title.”

The gallant efforts of Reed and his TwoTwo Motorsports’ outfit have been recognised by American Honda, who will be lending factory support to the Aussie for the final two rounds as its regular riders, Trey Canard and Josh Grant, sit injured on the sidelines.

“I’m pumped to know that American Honda have full confidence in me and my team’s campaign to win the title,” added Reed.

“The championship is still wide open and every ounce of Honda’s assistance is valuable and appreciated.”

Earlier this week, American Honda Racing Team manager Erik Kehoe credited TwoTwo Motorsports for its ‘awesome’ efforts.

“Chad has done a great job putting together a highly talented team to support his 2011 racing efforts,” he said. “We would love to see Chad win the Supercross title in his first season on a Honda.”

The all-time AMA Supercross podium leader, Reed is just six points off leader Ryan Villopoto.

The gap back to 2010 champion Ryan Dungey is just a point, with Reed’s nemesis James Stewart a further two points adrift.
