A triumphant victory at Appin has New Zealand's Josh Coppins back in title contention for 2011.

New Zealander Josh Coppins has boosted himself straight back into title contention after a stunning overall MX Nationals victory at Appin’s yesterday.

Coppins, 34, closed to within five points of the title lead from 35, a superb rebound following a disastrous season opener at Broadford last month.

“This is my first win in Australia, the championship points got a lot tighter and I think we are starting to pick up some momentum,” the former world title runner-up said.

The Kiwi fan favourite used his unmatched experience to win via a consistent effort of 2-3-4-3 results in the four-moto format, capturing his first overall since joining CDR Rockstar Energy Yamaha for 2011.

The win was all the more sweeter for Coppins as he suffered a severe ankle injury in the NZ finale a week prior to Appin, casting him in doubt for the round altogether.

“Things obviously went a lot better today than the opening round,” Coppins reflected. “I was able to keep clear of trouble in all four motos and focused on putting in the best laps I could given the conditions and my ankle.

“I also must give credit to the CDR Rockstar Team. Everyone worked tirelessly since round one to ensure the bike was perfect and that I had no excuses.”

The series will continue at Raymond Terrace in New South Wales this weekend for round three of nine in 2011.
