Yamaha reveals Supermoto-based Aussie road race series

Yamaha will support a pair of Supermoto-style road race series in the AFX-SBK and ASBK this year.

Yamaha will support a pair of Supermoto-style road race series in the AFX-SBK and ASBK this year.

Yamaha Motor Australia has revealed that it will support two new national road race series this season based off Supermoto-style regulations.

Set to be contested at Formula Xtreme and Australian Superbike Championship events, the bitumen-based series are aimed at dirt bike riders who are looking to try road racing at minimal costs.

Open to all manufacturer’s 450cc motocross and enduro models, the AFX-SBK series will be a three-round affair under the title of the Australian Supermono Championship.

As for the ASBK, its identical two-round series will be called the Australian Supermoto RR Championship and both will feature a Yamaha YZ450F as first prize for the title winners along with prize money.

According to a release issued by Yamaha, both series will be included in the series’ television packages.

Entrants are allowed a minimum tyre/wheel size of 17-inch, but there is no maximum limit. Gearing changes are also allowed, but very little else can be altered.

“It makes a lot of sense to run a series using the most popular competition motorcycle in the country – the 450cc single cylinder four-stroke motocross and serious enduro models,” YMA motorsport manager Ray Howard said.

“Most manufacturers sell them, and thousands are sold each year. Keeping the barriers to entry low should introduce a host of new riders to road racing.

“Plus the limited changes are designed to reward talent rather than the rider who spends the most money on his bike.”

AFXC Supermono competitors’ entry fees for the two days of each round will be offset by sponsorship from Yamaha, amounting in an entry fee of $95 for those events. ASBK Supermoto RR entry fees haven’t been released.

To coincide with the series, Yamaha Race Developments (YRD) is offering two kits for purchase. Kit 1, featuring 17-inch wheels only, will cost approximately $1000 according to Yamaha.

Kit 2, which will feature 17-inch wheels and tyres, a front brake, front guard and gearing set will be available for approximately $2500.

YRD can also offer complete kitted YZ450Fs ready to race, their price available on application with YRD’s John Redding at [email protected].
