Queensland Raceway has postponed its scheduled track resurfacing that was set to take place on 28-29 January due to the horrific floods that have affected many Queensland towns in recent weeks.

The Ipswich-based circuit will now wait until November at the earliest before it resurfaces the notoriously bumpy surface at the ‘Paperclip’, meaning that both rounds of the 2011 Australian Superbike Championship will be contested on the current surface.

“The resurface of 28-29 January is not going to happen,” circuit owner John Tetley told leading Australian motorsport and V8 Supercars website Speedcafe.com.au.

The reason for the lengthy delay is because road construction company Fulton Hogan will now turn its attention to repairing the many public roads that have been damaged in the floods.

“Fulton Hogan’s biggest issue is that they’re going to need all of their capacity for road repairs, so we’ve agreed to delay our resurfacing of the track,” Tetley continued.

“It’s selfish to be resurfacing a race track when people need roads. I’m not quite sure how that will finish up yet, but it does mean that we probably won’t get the track resurfaced until November – and that’s a bit a shame.”

Queensland Raceway is currently experiencing minor flooding from the torrential rain in the area, also being used as a base for road transport as many roads around the Ipswich area have been shut down this week.
