Oz SX: Mackenzie confident after second Super X podium

Billy Mackenzie rode to his second podium in two attempts in Brisbane on Saturday night.

Billy Mackenzie rode to his second podium in two attempts in Brisbane on Saturday night.

Kawasaki Racing Team contender Billy Mackenzie believes he could have been a contender for the Monster Energy Super X, Australasian Supercross Championship, podium if he hadn’t have been ruled of the opening rounds through injury.

Mackenzie missed out on the opening five rounds with a broken collarbone, however his form in the final two rounds upon return was astounding as he raced to a pair of second place finishes.

“I wish I could’ve done the whole series now because I really feel like I could’ve been up there after these last couple of rounds,” Mackenzie commented. “I showed that I’ve got the pace for Supercross so I’m looking forward to next year.”

Last weekend’s Brisbane finale saw Mackenzie finish second behind part-time teammate Josh Hansen, picking up his first final victory in the second final of the Triple Challenge format.

“I’m really happy [with] second overall for my second Supercross, but you know it wasn’t really Supercross out there – it was a bit of a survival in that round but I did it,” the Scotsman added.

“The Kawasaki worked well and got me through it. I had my mechanics on hand on the start and we made a plan and we stuck to it and it got us second overall. I feel like maybe I could have won it but I had a small crash in the first race but overall I’m happy.”

Despite missing much of the series, Mackenzie was still able to clinch 10th overall in the series for 2010.
