AEC: Supermoto standout Reekie impresses with 6 Hour win

Team Cessnock riders Phil Lovett, Simon Galloway and Angus Reekie celebrate thier 6 Hour Production victory.

Team Cessnock riders Phil Lovett, Simon Galloway and Angus Reekie celebrate thier 6 Hour Production victory.

Multi-time national Supermoto champion Angus Reekie made his road race debut in Sunday’s Bel-Ray 6 Hour, Australian Endurance Championship, at Phillip Island, racing with Team Cessnock to victory in the Production category aboard a KTM 1190 RC8R.

Reekie has been eyeing a switch to the black top for months since watching the likes of fellow ex-Supermoto standouts Troy Herfoss, Rick Olson and Cru Halliday successfully make the transition.

In his first competitive outing Reekie took to the tarmac with ease, racing to victory with teammates Phil Lovett and Simon Galloway, also finishing an astounding seventh outright.

“It was a good experience, especially considering it was my first road race event,” Reekie commented. “We only had a limited amount of time on the bike, as well as at Phillip Island.

“In the end it was a really good outcome and a strong result for the team on what was basically a standard KTM 1190 RC8R.

“Road racing is what I want to do, so hopefully we can put a program together to race full time next season.”

It’s expected that Reekie will compete aboard an RC8R Track in next year’s Formula Xtreme Championship Series as part of the twin-cylinder category.

Signifying the near-standard RC8R’s strength in the endurance event, Team Cessnock finished nine laps ahead of its nearest Production class competitor, which was a BMW S 1000 RR, while the Aprilia RSV4 in third outright was 17 laps in arrears of the KTM.
