Oz SM: World number two Gozzini wins Aussie Supermoto

Davide Gozzini may have been the winner, but emergence of Liam Robertson highlighted the 2010 Australian Supermoto Championship held in Collie, WA, over the weekend.

While Gozzini wowed the crowd, claiming five wins from six races, it was Robertson who proved himself one of the best-performed Australian Supermoto riders.

The Western Australian native finished third overall, amassing 111 points to finish behind the all-conquering Gozzini (147 points) and British Supermoto star Christian Iddon (135 points).

Saturday’s first round of racing was a stop-start affair, with rain playing havoc with the track forcing the red-flagging of two races throughout the afternoon.

Despite the weather threatening to dampen the weekend, Gozzini put a smile all everyone’s face with a perfect three from three performance.

The Italian was pushed all the way by Iddon and Australian hopeful Rowan Tegart.

“Today was hard with the weather changing from wet to dry and then wet again,” Gozzini said.

Sunday was greeted with far more optimism as the heavens cleared, making for some brilliant racing.

In what was described as some of the best riding scene in Australia for some time, Gozzini and Iddon pushed each other to the limit.

Iddon did break through to claim his first win of the event, but Gozzini returned to the top of the podium in the event’s final race to end what was a brilliant weekend for the world number two in winning fashion.
