Yamaha Racing Team riders Kevin Curtain and Rick Olson have clinched the FX1000 and FX600 categories at Eastern Creek’s Australian Formula Xtreme Championship finale on Sunday.

In FX1000, Curtain entered the round with a comfortable points lead on his factory Yamaha YZF-R1, only needing to finish to capture a record sixth FX title.

The round was won by Ducati ASBK regular Craig McMartin with 1-2-2 results on his 1198R, Curtain sealing the title with 2-1-3 results for second overall – his victory in race two enough to wrap up the championship with a race left to run.

“It’s great to win another championship,” Curtain commented. “It’s been a while since I have been in this position but it feels good and I am glad I could get it done for the Yamaha team.”

Curtain’s FX1000 teammate Pat Medcalf rounded out the overall podium for the round with 3-3-1 results, the top five completed by Cru Halliday (YRD/Clinton’s Toyota Yamaha) and Zac Davies (Team Green Racing/ICU Security Cameras/Side By Side Kawasaki).

Medcalf finished third in the series overall, behind Honda rider Glenn Cullen (Trevor Jordan Motorcycles/Shock Treatment/BENS Honda), who was sixth at Eastern Creek on the weekend.

Young gun Rick Olson denied Curtain of the championship double as he held on to claim the FX600 championship – adding it to the Australian Superstock 600 Championship he won in 2009.

Olson claimed the title with second overall at Eastern Creek with 2-1-2 results, his race two win the pivotal moment of the round.

Olson clinched the title by just two points after an entertaining dual between the teammates throughout the year.

“I sure made hard work of that,” Olson said. “I was a nerve racking race but I wasn’t going to let it slip. I knew I had to get second in that last race and once I crossed the finish line I was relieved as much as I was excited.

“ I want to thank everyone at YRT for their continued support again in 2010. Results are always a reflection of the team a rider has around him and the guys we have at YRT do an amazing job.”

Curtain was fair in defeat despite winning overall at Eastern Creek with 1-2-1 finishes, acknowledging Olson’s form to win the title.

“ It would have been nice to take out the 600cc class as well, but congratulations to Rick on the way he raced this year and he deserved the championship.”

Rounding out the FX600 podium at Eastern Creek was Yamaha development rider Mike Jones (California Superbike School/Yamaha/SW Racing/KBL), while in the series it was Jesse Austin (Central Coast Performance Motorcycles/Mick Cole Motorcycles Yamaha) who made it a 1-2-3 finish for Yamaha.

Debuting for YRT in the Formula Oz category aboard a slick-shod FX1000 YZF-R1 was 2008 ASBK champion Glenn Allerton, who won the overall with 1-2-1 results after Davies won the second race of the round.

The Formula Xtreme categories will now turn their attention to the three-round Summer Series, which kicks off at Eastern Creek on 3-4 December.
