SGP: Crump inches closer to top of Speedway GP title chase

Crump has climbed to second in the Speedway GP standings after finishing third on Saturday.

Crump has climbed to second in the Speedway GP standings after finishing third on Saturday.

Defending Speedway Grand Prix World Champion Jason Crump has passed rival Jaroslaw Hampel to sit second in the world championship after finishing third at the FIM Dansk Metal Nordic SGP at Vojens over the weekend.

Coming off the back of a successful playoff win for Polish League team Elite Vetlanda, Crump had the pace to be a very real threat.

The Australian, gave his all in the difficult, wet conditions, recording top three placings in all his heat races before finishing second in his semi-final race.

Crump finished third in the rain soaked final and took away 15 championship points but was unable to match the consistency of championship leader Tomsz Gollob who produced a rare seven win maximum.

With just two rounds remaining and 19 points separating him from Gollob, Crump acknowledged he would need a lot of luck to catch him now.

“You can’t complain when you are beaten by a guy who performs like that,” Crump said referring to Gollob. “There is no way I could match that tonight and it is certainly going to be tough to catch him now.

“I am pleased with my own performance I have been riding better and better over these past few grand prix. I know my limits and I am riding within them at the moment but I am improving every week so I am confident I will be back stronger than ever next year.”

The penultimate FIM Speedway Grand Prix will be held at Olympia Stadium in Terenzano, Italy in a fortnights time on 24 September.
