CJC Racing’s decision to field former Australian Superbike Champion Craig Coxhell in the Superstock 1000 A-grade ranks in last weekend’s third round of the 2010 ASBK championship has proved a genius one, the Victorian storming to pole position and winning both races on debut in the class.

Coxhell impressed during Saturday’s qualifying session to become the first Superstock rider to make the Superpole qualifying shootout that fields the top eight riders in the combined Superbike and Superstock 1000 A and B ranks, before going on to take 6-7 results outright on Sunday afternoon.

“It’s a great result for us and shows what the bike is really capable of,” Coxhell said of the brand new BMW S 1000 RR. “The team’s working great this year, everyone settling in nicely and working well together under Radar’s direction and its showing on the track.

“To be finishing ahead of factory Superbikes on a Superstock-spec bike is just awesome. The bike is literally what you get from the showroom with some suspension work and an Akrapovic pipe bolted on, and to smash the lap record by 1.2 seconds on it when we still have plenty of development work to do shows its potential.”

A highlight of the weekend came when Coxhell’s standard BMW was clocked at 270km/h down Queensland Raceway’s back straight, second only to the 273km/h of factory Team Suzuki GSX-R1000 Superbike of Josh Waters.

Team manager Rob Coxhell was also excited with the result in the team’s second outing of the season on the German sportsbike.

“I couldn’t be happier, I don’t think you could have scripted our first two outings much better really,” he commented. “We’ve closed the gap to the guys in the top five of the Superbike class and hopefully with this under our belt we can move forward again at the next round.

“We came here to get the first podium for BMW in Australia on the new S 1000 RR and we’ve done it. Their last win was in ’77 at the Castrol 6 Hour I believe, so it’s been a while between drinks for them and they deserve the accolades – it’s a great package.”

Coxhell now sits fifth in the Superstock 1000 A championship after missing the opening two rounds of the season.
