Todd Waters was all smiles after claiming the red plate on Sunday.

Cougar Bourbon Honda Thor Racing’s Todd Waters took over the red plate in the 2010 Rockstar Energy MX Nationals at Canberra last weekend, his round victory in the gruelling four moto back-to-back format setting him up as a true championship contender.

Waters won the round after accumulating 90 points by finishing the four 8-lap races third, first, third and first. He now leads the Pro Open Championship by 13 points ahead of defending Champion Jay Marmont.

“This is a great result for the whole team,” Waters said. ”They have all been putting in 100 percent, so it is great to be able to do the same and give them this win.

“I didn’t really get the best of starts but I put my head down and charged through and came away with two race wins. My focus is firmly on this championship and I am extremely fortunate to have a fantastic support network around me. My mum, dad, sister Nikki and girlfriend Jill along with everyone from the Cougar Bourbon Honda Thor Racing Team all help to make my job so much easier.”

Team principal Yarrive Konsky praised his young charger’s consistency, excited to see him go head-to-head against the experienced might of defending champion Jay Marmont, World GP winner Billy Mackenzie, and other more established stars.

“This is an amazing result for the whole team,” Konsky said. “I really could not have asked for more from Todd. He put in 100 percent today and thoroughly deserved this win. We analysed what we did at the first event and worked with Todd to improve on a few areas. He took those changes and put them into effect today.

“His attitude and desire to achieve is second to none and to win this round with the four race format is quite exceptional.”

Round three of the MX Nationals takes place on 2 May at Geelong’s Barrabool Motocross Track in Victoria.
