Taking poles at this first Grand Prix of 2010, Germans Max Nagl (MX1) and Ken Roczen (MX2) handed KTM and Suzuki respectively their first success of the season on the Gorna Rositza hard pack course.
Nagl pulled away from the rest of the pack and did a race on his own, winning in front of Sebastien Pourcel and defending champion Tony Cairoli on the KTM 350.
Roczen instead fought tooth and nail at the start to the race, passing first defending Champion Marvin Musquin then leader Jeffrey Herlings. Musquin took an eventual second ahead of Herlings.
Max Nagl of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing MX1 rode a perfect qualifying heat to wrap up the pole as well as the first Lovemytime MX1 Pole Position Award, the popular prize offered the MX1 and MX2 racers by the Lovemytime brand.
The German moved past Kawasaki Racing’s Seb Pourcel right at the opening lap as the French took the holeshot. Pourcel tried to keep close but settled for an eventual second, which is still a great comeback for the 25-year-old.
Other Red Bull KTM Factory Racing MX1 man Tony Cairoli recovered from a bad start by passing Philippaerts and eventually Desalle to take third in qualifying. The only 350cc mounted rider said he is still confident for tomorrow’s two motos.
Making his first appearance with the Rockstar Teka Suzuki World MX1 team Clement Desalle managed to keep a hungry Cairoli behind for most of the race but a better line by Cairoli on a uphill meant the Italian moved past with three laps to go.
Yamaha Monster Energy Motocross’ Philippaerts completed the top five.
A tough qualifying for Barragan, who crashed at lap one, will see the Spaniard line up in 15th place tomorrow.
A sensational Ken Roczen of Teka Suzuki Europe World MX2 took the manufacturer’s first pole position in the MX2 class as he went on to win today’s qualifying race at Sevlievo. The German, who collected the Lovemytime MX2 Pole Position Award, remained at the bottom of the top three for the first four laps while a storming Herlings was leading, then moved past second placed Musquin and finally Herlings to take a well deserved win.
Red Bull KTM Factory Racing MX2 team mates Marvin Musquin and Jeffrey Herlings took second and third in qualifying. Herlings led the first half of the race until the arrival of Roczen, then was passed also by defending Champion Musquin.
A solid Jeremy Van Horebeek of CLS Kawasaki took fourth while team mate Steven Frossard completed the top five after a strong recovery – following an early race crash.
2009 EMX2 European Champion Christophe Charlier took seventh.
