Former American AMA Superstock 1000 Champion Aaron Gobert will return to Australia in 2010, contesting the Australian Supersport Championship aboard a Yamaha YZF-R6.

Gobert will return to domestic competition in Australia for the first time since winning the Australian 250cc Production Championship in 2000, set to make his domestic return at Phillip Island next weekend.

Since that series victory, Gobert has enjoyed considerable success in the United States, winning the 2004 Superstock title ahead of current Superbike World Champion Ben Spies, scoring six race wins and 25 podiums in the process as part of the factory Yamaha, Honda and Aprilia teams during the his AMA career.

“I’m excited to be coming back to race in Australia and also to be riding an R6 again, which I’ve had a lot of success on in the past,” the 29-year-old said. “It’s been almost 10 years since I’ve raced a full season here, so it will be good to get on track and get the season started.”

Gobert’s debut on the R6 at Phillip Island took place on Monday and Tuesday alongside many ASBK regulars, before continuing his testing schedule at Eastern Creek alongside the factory YRT effort yesterday.

Round one will see Gobert riding with support from Victorian Yamaha dealership Vern Graham on 26-28 February at the scenic Phillip Island Circuit in Victoria.
