Australian Garry McCoy has confirmed that he will return to the MotoGP World Championship category in 2010, as reported on MotoOnline.com.au late last week.

McCoy inked a two-year deal with the FB Corse team at its headquarters in Italy over the weekend on Saturday, returning to the premier class for the first time since 2006 with Ilmor GP.

“It’s a great pleasure to have the opportunity to return to MotoGP,” 37-year-old McCoy said. “I didn’t know almost anything about the team, but what I saw seems really good. The whole bike will have to be developed and it will be hard work, but I find it exciting.

“In the factory I found out what technical resources we’ll have available – the engine and the chassis are based on top level projects and models. Now we have to work on developing them.”

In a surprising turn of events, it’s expected that McCoy will race the entire 2010 season with FB Corse, using this year as a development season before hoping to improve in 2011.

“I am so happy and surprised with what we managed to do due in so few hours – from the disappointment of negotiations [with John Hopkins] that ended so abruptly, we’ve gone in a very short time to a sincere, loyal and mutual agreement based on trust and transparency,” said team owner Andrea Ferrari.

“I’d like to thank all the those people who supported us in these last few difficult days and we believe that Garry is the best rider we could imagine having with us now.”

A planned first test is set to take place at the end of this month in Europe, marking the start of McCoy’s MotoGP comeback on the triple-cylinder 800cc FB01.
