Oz MX: Bikes versus helicopters for final MX Nationals round

MOTORCYCLING AUSTRALIA:

As Australia’s best Motocross riders descend on Coolum this weekend for the final round of the 2009 Australian Motocross Championship some will be getting a little more than they bargained for at the Sunshine Coast Airport this Friday morning.

In a first for the Series, the challenge has been set with an epic off-track battle set to take place as a handful of Australia’s best rider’s line up – pitting their bikes against the skill and speed of Graeme Gillies, of Blue Tongue Helicopters, in his Robinson R22 helicopter.

The nearly two kilometre race looks set to be massive and Series Promoter, Kevin Williams said that it is a great opportunity for the guys to show off what they can do and is hopeful of a bike victory on the day.

“What a way to kick off the final round of what has been a massive Motocross season so far!” Williams said.

“Coolum and the Sunshine Coast always put on an awesome event and on Friday we’ll be taking it to another level thanks to the support of both the Sunshine Coast Airport and Graeme Gillies of Blue Tongue Helicopters.

“This is such a great chance for these riders so show just how quick they can be when they keep their wheels firmly on the ground and I’d like to see them take the flag ahead of the chopper!”

Airport General Manager Peter Pallot said it’s a great opportunity to support Motocross racing on the Sunshine Coast and is looking forward to the events over the weekend.

“This is such a great opportunity for the Sunshine Coast Airport to support the Australian Motocross Championship which is one of the area’s major events,” Pallot said.

“I can’t wait to see the racing on and off the track this Friday and on the weekend.”

Helicopter Pilot, Gillies, said that he was keen to take up the challenge and was looking forward to taking on some of Australia’s fastest riders in his pride and joy.

“I actually race in touring cars and love motorsport,” Gillies said.

“It’s just such a great chance for me to get behind an awesome event and to continue to work closely with the Sunshine Coast Airport.

“I’ve always been a fan of racing and I love a challenge so the boys had better watch out on Friday morning as I’ll be racing to win!”
