As the 2009 Australian Motocross Championship heads into its final two rounds the guys won’t be the only ones lining up on the grid chasing Series points, with the Australian Women’s Motocross Championship kicking off at Lakes, NSW in a few weeks time.

Reigning Women’s Motocross Champion, Kristy Gillespie (KTM), is looking forward to the Series kicking off and can’t wait for the chance to defend her 2008 crown.

“I don’t expect defending my 2008 title to be easy,” Gillespie said.

“I know there are a few girls who have stepped up from the junior ranks since last year’s title, so there will be some new faces and some new speed there.

“I think it’s definitely going to be harder to defend the title than being the underdog and going for the first one!”

With the Women’s Championship now coinciding with the final two rounds of the Pro Opens and Pro Lites, Gillespie said that it is a great opportunity for the girls to share in the media coverage and exposure that the guys competing in the Nationals get.

“Running the women’s titles at the rounds with the guys will definitely give the girls more exposure with all the teams and media there,” she said.

“Especially being the last two rounds with both the Pro Opens and Lites Championships being so close, there’s probably going to be a lot of media and a lot of hype around it which will be great for the girls.

“Women who enjoy racing should definitely come along, besides, with the two rounds only a week apart you can’t beat it – go to Lakes, and then have a week’s holiday at Coolum and then race again – who wouldn’t want to go and hang out on the beach for a week!”

Williams Event Management (WEM) is encouraging all women who are interested in riding to send in their entry forms which can be found on the Series website at: www.ozmotox.com.au under the round information section of the site.

Entries close 10 days prior to each event and those who enter for both rounds will receive a free three month subscription to Dirt Action.
