The MX2 class of the 2017 Motul MX Nationals championship will go down to the wire after Egan Mastin (Davey Motorsports KTM) claimed another 1-1 result at Toowoomba’s penultimate round on Sunday.

In moto one, pole-sitter Mastin (Davey Motorsports KTM) pipped American-based guest Hayden Mellross (DPH Motorsport Yamaha) for the hole-shot.

The pair would exchange positions on the opening lap before Mastin extended a healthy advantage of 5.396s to take a convincing victory and inch closer toward Wilson Todd (DPH Motorsport Yamaha) in the race for the championship.

Mellross maintained second for the entirety of the 30-minute plus one lap moto, as Mitch Evans (Serco Yamaha), Todd and Jay Wilson (Raceline Pirelli KTM) were third through to fifth. The trio all engaged in an intense battle for third, with Evans making multiple passes in the closing stages, including Todd with just over a lap to go.

Dylan Wills (KSF Racing Husqvarna), who was also involved in the battle for third before a crash relegated him down the field, was sixth and followed by Hamish Harwood (Davey Motorsport KTM), Kyle Webster (Penrite CRF Honda Racing), Kaleb Barham (SD3 Husqvarna) and Jayden Rykers (Raceline Pirelli KTM).

It was much the same for Mastin in moto two, shooting out to yet another hole-shot and gapping the field immediately in the opening laps to take another commanding 5.031s victory, completing a perfect 1-1 day at the Echo Valley circuit.

Todd was second in a highly-spirited performance after passing rival Evans at the halfway mark, making a late charge for Mastin, however fell short on time to be within striking distance. Evans settled for third, as Harwood and Wilson completed the top five.

Sixth was Wills, followed by Webster, Barham, Rykers and Mellross. Behind Mastin for the overall was Todd, Evans, Mellross and Harwood, as Todd continues to control the championship by three points from a fast-finishing Mastin and with Evans a further 11 in arrears.

In the Rising Star Rookies it was Mason Semmens (KTM) who won the overall at Toowoomba, topping Regan Duffy (KTM) and Bailey Malkiewicz (Husqvarna), while in the Amateur Cup Kerrod Morrissy (KTM) won from Ryan Kenney (KTM) and Travis Regeling (Honda).

There’s one round remaining in the 2017 Motul MX Nationals, heading direct to Coolum in Queensland next weekend on 19-20 August for the title-deciding final event of the season.
