National Pump Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team rises to Wanneroo challenge

Kawasaki Motors Australia press release:

National Pump Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s MX1 racers Matt Moss and Kade Mosig absorbed everything thrown their way to finish second and fourth overall at an action-packed fifth round of 2016 MX Nationals at Wanneroo, Western Australia.

At the iconic deep-sand track, multi-time Australian champion Matt Moss put his 2016 KX450F on the podium for the first time since the series opener at Horsham, with an emphatic second overall result.

After finishing fifth in Super Pole, 27-year-old Moss charged around the ever-increasingly difficult track to a solid third and a fourth in the two opening races.

Despite a big crash in final race of the day, Moss crossed the finish line in second place, but was penalised 20 seconds for accelerating too soon after a yellow flag. The time penalty dropped him back to fourth in the race, but he still maintained a hard-earned second overall for the day.

“I really felt like I got my mojo back in that last race,” Moss described. “I was penalised, had a big crash and had some tough battles, but it really brought out the best in me.

“I’m happy with the result, although I felt like I could have gained better placings in the first two races. It’s good to bounce back with a podium for the whole team and go into this mid-season break on a positive note.”

Just behind Moss, National Pump Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Mosig improved each outing and shone brighter the rougher the track got.

After clawing his way back from an opening lap crash to finish ninth in the first race, Mosig placed fifth in moto two before a coming into his own during the drama-packed third race on his way to second position. His 9-5-2 result earned him fourth overall for the day.

“I came into this round prepared and believing in myself as I love riding sand, but I was disappointed I made a mistake on the opening lap of the first race,” Mosig explained. “I regrouped for the second race and got up front and had some good battles on my way to fifth, which was solid, but not where I really want to be.

“The last moto was chaotic and I just tried to hang in there and tick my laps off. It’s encouraging to finish the first half of the season on a good note, but I feel a little frustrated with how it’s gone as a whole. We’ll reset, reassess and make some improvements before the second half of the championship swings into action.”

Moss continues to sit in fourth position in the MX1 championship points chase, while teammate Mosig remains in fifth position in the MX1 points.

In the MX2 class, National Pump Monster Energy Kawasaki’s KX250F pilot Jake Moss had a challenging day. Moss finished eighth and 15th in his first two outings before crashing heavily early in the final race and pulled out with three fractured ribs.

“Today was the worst day of racing I’ve had this year,” Moss mused. “It’s disappointing as Wanneroo is one of my favourite tracks in Australia and I came in prepared and confident of a good result.

“I’m pretty sore after my crash, but this five-week break has come at a perfect time, I’ll be working hard to ensure I’m back to full health before round six.”

Moss’s tough day in the sand sees him positioned in seventh in the MX2 championship hunt before the sixth round of the 2016 MX Nationals will be held at Nowra, New South Wales, on 3 July.
