Podium finish for Waters, while Wilson makes positive return at round three

Wilson’s Coolair Motul Factory Suzuki press release:

It was yet another successful hit out for Wilson Coolair Motul Factory Suzuki at Round 3 of the Motul MX Nationals at Broadford today, with Todd Waters finishing on the podium for the second time so far this season, while Luke Wilson made a positive return to racing at the State Motorcycle Complex in Victoria.

With significant rain fall affecting round three today, Motul MX Nationals event staff were forced to cancel both Qualifying and Superpole for the Thor MX1 competitors, and when racing eventually got underway both Wilson and Waters were faced with treacherous track conditions.

Despite round three marking the first ‘mudder’ for the MX Nationals in two years, Waters rose to the occasion in race one aboard his Suzuki RMZ 450, securing the holeshot and leading from the minute the gate dropped to when the chequered flag flew. For Wilson, moto one proved to be even tougher than first anticipated, unfortunately suffering a flat front tyre on lap two, however the Suzuki mounted rider persisted in some of the toughest conditions so far this year to finish the race, and conclude moto one in 15th position.

In race two, Waters got to yet another solid start, however a crash involving another rider in the opening stages of the moto held him up, and despite making up a number of positions and nearly catching third place in the closing stages of the race, Waters ran out of time, and was forced to settle for fourth position. For Wilson, the differing track conditions in moto two proved to be difficult, and after 30 gruelling minutes on track, Wilson crossed the line in a hard fought 15th position.

At the conclusion of the round, Water’s 1,4 results saw him awarded with third place on the overall round three Thor MX1 podium, while Wilson concluded his first round back from injury in 13th position overall.

Wilson Coolair Motul Factory Suzuki’s Waters now remains in an impressive third place in the Thor MX1 championship standings after round three, and sits only eight points shy of the series points lead.

Todd Waters – MX1 (1st, 4th) 3rd Overall

“In the first race, I felt like I rode how I should have. I’ve been training hard and the bike is good, so especially in those conditions it was awesome to get the win in moto one. I really felt like it was going to be my day to be honest,” he said.

“In the second race Kade Mosig crashed in front of me, and I just landed straight on top of him – I really had no where to go, and I just hope he’s ok – I got back up and got back to fourth, but even though I was catching the front guys I just ran out of time to make it happen.

“I knew I needed to pass third place for the overall in race two and I just couldn’t get it done which was a bit disappointing, but it’s good to know that our speed is there and we’ve finished on the podium again.

“The last two races before the break are sand races which I’m really excited about, so hopefully we can set ourselves up well and put ourselves in contention for the championship.”

Luke Wilson – MX1 (15th, 15th) 13th Overall

“I’m pretty happy with 13th overall especially being my first round back from injury,” he said.

“I wasn’t exactly happy with the way that I rode today – the track didn’t really work for me and I struggled out there all day, especially with that bad luck in the first race.

“In the second race everything was great with the bike but I just didn’t bring it to the table. There’s no excuses, so I’m just going to look ahead to round four and hopefully step things up there.

“As a team the goal is always to finish every race, and we managed to grab some points and do that today, so although it’s not the best day result wise, we’re happy to take the positives out of round three.”

Neale Wilson – Wilson Coolair Motul Factory Suzuki Team Manager

“To finish round three with one of our boys on the podium again, as a team we are very happy,” he said.

“It was great to see Todd get to such an impressive start in moto one, and lead from the minute the gate dropped until the very end of the race. The track at Broadford tested everyone but Todd really showed that he’s able to take on anything today.

“It was also fantastic to see Luke back out there. He has worked very hard in the last week since he’s been able to get back on the bike, and to come away with a 13th overall at only his first round back is a solid achievement.

“We can’t thank our sponsors and partners enough for their commitment and dedication to our team. With round three being a mud race everyone was tested, but our products performed in the tough conditions, and that’s really a testament to the team we have around us for 2016.

“We have a few weeks now to get ready for round three which will be nice, but all in all we are thrilled to finish yet another round on the podium, and to walk away happy and healthy.”

Wilson Coolair Motul Factory Suzuki will now begin preparations for round four of the 2016 Motul MX Nationals being held at Murray Bridge in South Australia on Sunday May 22.
