Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart’s immediate racing future is up in the air following a recent announcement via social media.

After suffering a concussion during the season opening Monster Energy AMA Supercross round, the former champion attempted to return at Oakland’s round four last weekend before exiting the 450SX main event at the halfway point.

“I could tell from the first practice that things weren’t right from my A1 incident,” said Stewart. “But I figured if I kept riding things would get better. As the night went on things got worse and that’s what led me to pull off in the main.

“You can practice during the week all you want but racing is completely different, it’s my fault though because instead of letting things heal 100 percent, I keep rushing to race for my fans and because I love to race.”

Stewart feels he is not fit to be racing a motorcycle at this stage, admitting he should not have raced inside the O.co Coliseum on 30 January.

“Clearly I’m not ready to race and after Saturday I felt like an idiot for trying to when I know I shouldn’t,” he explained. “I shouldn’t have been there in the first place.”

An indefinite break from racing is the decision Stewart has made, stating he will return when he feels 100 percent and can once again enjoy himself and ride to his full potential.

“At this point, I’m going listen to my body and come back when I’m ready to race,” he added. “It could be this weekend or a month from now but I’m going to do what’s best for me and not what’s best for the rest.

“I came back to race and have fun this year and racing when I can’t function 100 percent isn’t racing or fun – I’ll be back when I can do both of those things.”

Stay tuned for more on Stewart’s plans to return to racing as they develop.
