MotoOnline.com.au tests the 2016 Sherco 300 SEF-R.

Sherco has made quite an impression since it was formed in 1998, not only on the European circuit, but now globally. With the signing of Australia’s dual world champion Mathew Phillips it appears the French brand will continue to excel and we jumped at the opportunity to test the 2016 300 SEF-R.

The Sherco 300 SEF-R will be a favourite amongst racers and trail riders because the bike is just so damn easy to ride. The 300 SEF-R handles like its on rails and the more you twist the throttle, the more you keep smiling.

It may lack in the displacement of its 350cc opposition, but it more than makes up for few less ponies in handling – it’s like a super-fast 250, which makes it a pleasure to ride in all kinds of conditions.

The 2016 Sherco 300 SEF-R mostly remains the same as the 2015 model. New doesn’t always mean better and Sherco already had a competitive package, so a few slight refinements is all that was needed.

It received a few minor adjustments to the sub-frame for easier access to the diagnostic plug and wiring within the air box area. A keyless ignition system has been adapted to the 2016 model, as well as changes to the front mudguard, but overall the bike is the same weapon from last year.

In general the 300 SEF-R is known for being a standout performer in the fast, tight single-trails. Sherco has designed the bike around a chrome molybdenum steel semi-perimeter frame, keeping the centre of gravity low and central.

The frame itself and overall feel of the bike is slightly more narrower and compact, which in turn really emphasises how nimble the bike is and its great cornering ability. You’ll be impressed with its characteristics from the outset.

WP Suspension levels out the ride, giving the bike a great feeling and a predictable, forgiving reaction to rocks and hard hits. If you’re looking to race the 300 SEF-R you’ll want to stiffen the suspension up a little, but regardless of racing or not, its a good idea to get the suspension set up to your weight and skill level.

The production suspension is more than capable in its stock setting, but you will benefit in the long run and get the most out of the bike’s strong points with the suspension dialled in and customised for you.

The Sherco 300 SEF-R’s motor is a strong performer as well, like a 250cc on steroids, the power has plenty of mumbo. It rolls on smoothly and has a broad range of power, so it’s easy to see why most people that have ridden the 300cc rave about it. The combination of power and agility make this bike so easy to ride and also enjoyable, no matter the track/trail conditions.

Of course, as with all Shercos, the 300 SEF-R has a two-stage map switch on the handlebars. From the standard race setting, flick the switch with your right thumb to the mild setting and you can adjust the power delivery to suit the trail. It will really be of benefit on slippery, wet climbs or muddy grass tracks, helping to manage the lack of traction.

Brembo brakes front and back are going to get the Sherco 300 SEF-R pulled up with ease. If you are already familiar with other European brands then you will know these brakes are more than capable of doing the job right in a consistent fashion. It also utilises a Brembo hydraulic clutch, which always provides the same light and consistent feel.

Possibly one of the most unique features of the Sherco 300 SEF-R is the lack of kick-starter. All of the Sherco range boast bulletproof electric starters, which is a real positive considering the improvement in battery life, size and durability these days. For practicality you can’t beat it and it’s proven to be reliable as well.

It’s easy to see why Sherco are gaining popularity and recognition after riding the 300 SEF-R. It is really hard to find fault in a bike that is just so fun and forgiving to ride. Track or trail, this bike is going to make your life easier; the bike turns on a dime and its smooth power just keeps on giving.

The 2016 Sherco 300 SEF-R is available at your local Sherco dealer from January 2016 for $12,690 plus ORC. If you’re interested or want to get out for a test ride or compare the bikes they have on offer, make sure you check out the Sherco Motorcycles Australia website for the next scheduled ride day or contact your local dealer to arrange a ride on one of the test fleet.
