Team Motul Suzuki’s Matt Moss dominated qualifying this afternoon as Bathurst Showground opens the 2015 Australian Supercross Championship.

Defending dual champion Moss was untouchable in the split qualifying sessions, setting the pace in the odd-numbered qualifier and the only rider to dip beneath the 1m00s bracket with a 59.967s.

Behind Moss was American Gavin Faith (Penrite Honda), who this year steps up to SX1 after winning the SX2 title last season, posting a 1m01.428s.

With rain beginning to fall during the odd session and becoming heavier by the time the even number bikes rolled out on track, Dan Reardon (CDR Yamaha) impressed in his return to supercross with third overall at 1m01.525s.

Behind Reardon completing the top five on combined times was Lawson Bopping (Peter Stevens DPH Yamaha) and Venezuelan debutant Anthony Rodriguez (Penrite Honda).

Sixth on the timesheets came Adam Monea (NPS Monster Energy Kawasaki), edging out Kade Mosig (CDR Yamaha) and national MX1 outdoor champion Kirk Gibbs (KTM Motocross Racing Team).

Completing the top 10 was Dylan Long (NPS Monster Energy Kawasaki) and Byrner’s Suzuki-backed privateer Sam Martin. Notable factory runners outside the top spots included Luke Styke (KTM Motocross Racing Team) in 11th and Jacob Wright (CDR Yamaha) 13th.

Wright’s return to racing following a full year on the sidelines was cut short with an incident in the whoops, reported to be out of tonight’s opener.

The quickest laps of the SX2 qualifiers were also set in session one, with Serco Yamaha’s Luke Clout setting a 1m08.576s to finish marginally ahead of Luke Arbon (SD3 Husqvarna) and American import Jimmy Decotis (Penrite Honda).

Penrite Honda Wilson MX teammates Jackson Richardson and Geran Stapleton were fourth and fifth respectively, while Lewis Woods (Davey’s Motorsport KTM) was fastest of the session two riders in sixth overall.

KTM Newcastle rider Dylan Wills jumped up to seventh in the closing stages, as Wade Hunter (Yamaha), Joel Wightman (CRF Honda Racing) and Kyle Webster (SFC Racing Yamaha) completed the top 10.

The SXD series is shaping up to be a closely-fought one as Brock McLeary (Raceline Pirelli Suzuki) was fastest with a 1m17.185s lap on a drying track. He headed Mitch Evans (GYTR Yamaha), his guest teammate Jordan Hill, Toby Stevens (KTM) and Kaleb Barham (KTM).
