Mixed bag results at round eight for Penrite Honda Wilson MX

Stapleton seventh as Wilson sits out with existing injury.

Wilson MX press release:

Penrite Honda Wilson MX has come away from round eight of the MX Nationals at Nowra, with a mixed bag of racing results to their name, after another big weekend of racing.

After welcoming Luke Wilson back from injury after sitting out round seven, the team was optimistic heading into the round, that both of their MX2 pilots could record encouraging results on the hard pack surface in New South Wales.

For Wilson at round eight, track time was short lived. After gritting his teeth through an excruciating qualifying session, Wilson headed out in moto one, hoping that adrenaline could mask the pain his thumb was causing. However, the pain proved to be too much in race one – Wilson opting to return to the pits and leave the racing up to teammate Geran Stapleton for the remainder of the day.

With Wilson out, Stapleton was left to fly the Penrite Honda Wilson MX flag in race one, and did so in spectacular fashion. After a solid start, Stapleton got to work, and crossed the line after 30 minutes in an outstanding fourth position, proving the pace is there to race with the front-runners.

In race number two, Stapleton got to an impressive start, however was edged out on the tight Nowra circuit, eventually crossing the line in 12th position. At the conclusion of the round, and despite the bad luck in the final moto, Stapleton recorded an impressive seventh overall for round eight.

Geran Stapleton MX2 – 7th Overall – (4th, 12th)

“It was a bit of an up and down weekend, but I’m definitely happy with my result in the first moto,” he said. “The last few rounds have been a real challenge, so to put it all together in the first race was a bit of a confidence boost. “The final moto was a tough one. I loved the track and the technical riding is something I really enjoy, but I got caught up at the back of the pack and there weren’t a lot of passing opportunities. “All in all, it was a pretty positive weekend, and a big improvement, so we’ll just keep working hard and hopefully we can build on the results for the next two rounds.”

Neale Wilson – Wilson MX Team Manager –

“It wasn’t a bad weekend for us, and it was great to see Geran show us what he is capable of in that first moto,” he said. “Luke made the decision during moto one to sit out, which I actually thought was very sensible. Then when he was trying to get up on the top of the truck to watch the races he hit his head, and ended up cracking his head open. “I can’t say enough about Racesafe, those guys fixed Luke up even though he wasn’t racing and you can’t really put into words how valuable it is having them at the track at every round. “We loved Geran’s performance in the first race, we thought he could actually take a podium – if he can put two good races together we know that he can do it. “He’s shown what he’s capable of, and he’s got two more rounds to get himself on the box. If all of the stars align he can do it.”
