Rewind: Matt Moss' Australian Supercross Lites titles

MotoOnline.com.au looks back at Moss' success as a triple Australian Supercross Champion.

When newly-crowned MX1 Australian Motocross Champion enters this weekend’s Australian Supercross Championship opener at Darwin’s Hidden Valley Raceway, he’ll do so with no less than three Lites titles to his credit.

From 2008 through 2011 Moss was near untouchable on a 250F in Supercross, winning his first title in 2008 under the guise of Super X with the Shift Motul Suzuki team – the very same team he will ride Pro Open with in 2013.

“To wrap up the championship is just a great feeling, not only for me personally but for everyone at Team Shift Motul Suzuki,” Moss said way back in 2008. “I knew that if I kept my head down I was a contender this year and I think my consistency has really paid off, it’s hard to describe how good a feeling it is to be the first winner of the Pro Lites Super X title for Suzuki.

“The RM-Z250 has been amazing to ride and it’s played a huge part in this championship. Hopefully I can have some more success in the next Motocross season and be back to defend this title as well for Suzuki in 2009.”

The following year in 2009 saw Moss defend his number one plate in a dominant performance – the same year he also went on to win the outdoor Lites title.

“That was fantastic,” Moss said in 2009 after piloting the 2010 RM-Z250 to the title. “I’m just so pumped to wrap up the title tonight. I’ve got a great crew in the Team Rockstar Motul Suzuki garage, a great bike in the new fuel injected Suzuki RM-Z250 and a great team manager and mentor in Jay Foreman.

“We had last years model ready to go and I knew it was a winning machine,” said Moss. “But we got an early shipment of two 2010 bikes, like a week before the first round. I pretty much did three laps, pulled in and said: ‘Jay, this is what we are gonna race.’ We put in some suspension, went racing and won that first round.”

The following season was a controversial one as Moss was awarded the title in 2010, but later had it stripped and handed to US import PJ Larsen and the JDR Motorsports KTM team. It was deemed he didn’t finish 75 percent of the first race at Brisbane’s finale in muddy conditions – losing his six points scored for 15th position and handing the title to Larsen by four points in the amended results.

Ironically, Moss returned in 2011 as part of the JDR KTM team and picked up his third title, this time aboard the 250 SX-F. He also won the outdoor title that same year before heading to the US in 2012.

“Today was just a great day, you know?” he said in 2011. “With a 22-point lead coming in, my nerves were sort of settled. Its hard to lose a championship in the final round with that kind of lead, so if you lose it you deserve it. I got a good start, sat in second and then got into first towards the end. It means a lot to me to win the night and to win the championship.”

Last year upon return from the US and back with the Motul Pirelli Suzuki crew, Moss was unfortunately ruled out of contention at round one with a shoulder injury in what was his fulltime return to the Open class.

With confidence on his side after an epic outdoor campaign, will season 2013 be the year that Moss finally meets his goal of winning a Supercross Open title on the RM-Z450? Time will tell!

After a major disappointment in 2010, Moss delivered KTM a title in 2011.
