Catching Up: Cheyne Boyd

Berry Sweet/Lucas Oil/Yamaha's new recruit speaks about the remainder of 2013.

Cheyne Boyd has enjoyed a storied career at the top level of Australian Motocross, battling for championships in his prime and competing for a number of the country’s top factory teams.

Following Tye Simmonds’ decision to retire mid-season, Boyd received the call to fill his spot at Berry Sweet/Lucas Oil/Yamaha for the remainder of 2013, beginning at this weekend’s Hervey Bay round of the Monster Energy MX Nationals.

MotoOnline.com.au got in touch with Boyd to speak about his prospects just 24 hours after being confirmed to the Yamaha-supported team.

Great news to see you signed for Craig Anderson’s Berry Sweet/Lucas Oil/Yamaha team. It’s come as a bit of a surprise, but it must be a really nice one for you?

Yeah, that’s it. When I started this year doing the Honda thing, the plan was to do selected races while working full time. I just wanted to stay active on the bike, do some races and sort of keep my name out there.

I’ve said it a million times, but I feel like I’m still able to run the speed of the top factory guys, so I’ve been waiting for something like this to pop up and now it has. It was a surprise coming from Ando, because you wouldn’t expect Tye Simmonds to retire.

I’m wrapt with everything that’s gone on this week.

How’s the transition been in these initial stages after some testing with Craig and the team?

It’s been good. Compared to the Honda it’s been a fairly easy transfer, I felt at home pretty quickly and the testing has been solid. Today we just had a shakedown of the race bike, a lot of starts, getting ready for the weekend.

I haven’t done as many races as I wanted to lately because I’ve been working a lot, but now this opportunity’s come up and I’m back full time [racing] on my normal program.

What’s the goal this weekend then at Hervey Bay?

This weekend it’s to go and ride consistent, be smart and stay healthy. Hopefully, I definitely think I’m capable of top 10 and try to get closer to that top five.

Last year you were on a 250F in the nationals, whereas this year at select rounds on the 450 your form has been pretty good so far. Do you feel like you’re back where you belong in MX1?

Yeah, I think so. The 250 thing was just something I wanted to do, so having that opportunity on a new team last year I felt like it was the direction to go in. But of course I feel more comfortable, better suited to a 450 and I’ve been racing big bikes since 2002.

So, I definitely feel comfortable and more at home on the bigger bike.

Well congratulations on the ride, looking forward to seeing you on the bike and awesome to have you back full time.

Thank you very much, I appreciate it.
